Sunset at Graça Viewpoint

Enjoying the sunset at Graça Viewpoint is, without question, one of the best sunset experiences Lisbon has to offer. The official name is Miradouro Sophia Mello Breyner Andresen, but everybody calls it the Graça Viewpoint and is a favorite gathering spot for sunset lovers. With a balcony facing west and overlooking Lisbon downtown, the view is second to none. The Castle at close distance with the river in the back makes it one of the best Miradouros in Lisbon.

At the same place where Lisbon locals and tourists gather daily for sunset, we can also find the Convento da Graça and Church. This spot was chosen by Dom Afonso Henriques, first King of Portugal, as the encampment for his troops during Lisbon’s siege in 1147. Dom Afonso Henriques’ choice should not be strange because the views from the Graça Viewpoint over the Castelo de São Jorge are one of the best.

The church and convent’s foundation dates back to the very beginnings of the Portuguese nation. Only in the 16th-century, the Church gave considerable attention to its development.

The great earthquake of 1755 destroyed much of the convent and razed a large part of Lisbon. The inevitable reconstruction resulted in what we can see and visit today.
The interior deserves a visit, and visitors can take pictures inside if there is no Mass happening. Restrictions only apply to the use of flashes and tripods.
