The Lavra Funicular: Lisbon\u2019s Oldest and Least-Known Funicular<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Lavra Funicular, also called\u00a0Elevador do Lavra<\/em>\u00a0o\u00a0Ascensor do Lavra<\/em>, is the oldest operating funicular in Lisbon. Opened on April 19, 1884 and designed by Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, this historic 188-meter line links Largo da Anunciada to Rua C\u00e2mara Pestana, between the Santo Ant\u00f3nio and Arroios districts. With an average slope of 22.9%, it remains one of the steepest and most charming funiculars in the city. Best Time to Photograph the Lavra Funicular<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For photographers, the ideal time to capture this funicular is in the late afternoon or at dusk. The combination of warm artificial lights and the deep blue evening sky creates a dramatic and atmospheric image.
The full length of the route can be walked, offering several excellent vantage points. One of the most photogenic spots is the upper terminal, which provides a beautiful view of the tracks and surrounding neighbourhood.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
