The Lavra Funicular: Lisbon’s Oldest and Least-Known Funicular

The Lavra Funicular, also called Elevador do Lavra ou Ascensor do Lavra, is the oldest operating funicular in Lisbon. Opened on April 19, 1884 and designed by Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, this historic 188-meter line links Largo da Anunciada to Rua Câmara Pestana, between the Santo António and Arroios districts. With an average slope of 22.9%, it remains one of the steepest and most charming funiculars in the city. For updated schedules and ticket prices, visit the Carris website.

Best Time to Photograph the Lavra Funicular

For photographers, the ideal time to capture this funicular is in the late afternoon or at dusk. The combination of warm artificial lights and the deep blue evening sky creates a dramatic and atmospheric image.
The full length of the route can be walked, offering several excellent vantage points. One of the most photogenic spots is the upper terminal, which provides a beautiful view of the tracks and surrounding neighbourhood.

The image above was taken handheld with a Fuji X-T2 and a Fuji 10–24mm lens at ISO 3200, 1/50s, f/5.0.
