The Lavra Funicular

The Lavra Funicular is the oldest and less known funicular in Lisbon.

The Elevador do Lavra, also known as the Ascensor do Lavra was opened on April 19, 1884,and was designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. The 188m-long funicular connects Largo da Anunciada to Rua Câmara Pestana in the parishes of Santo António and Arroios. The average slope is 22.9%. Please check schedule and prices at Carris website.

The best time to photograph the Lavra Funicular will be afternoon and especially dusk when the warm tones of the artificial light can make a statement against the dark blue sky.

The entire length of the line can be walked, which allows the photographer to choose a few nice shooting spots. My favorite is the top terminal, as shown in the picture above.

The shot above was handheld at ISO 3200, 1/50 sec, f:5.0 using a Fuij X-T2 with the Fuji 10-24mm

The Lavra Funicular can be visited with one of our Private Photography Tours, and you can get 20% discount with the code 20PRIVATE when booking through our website.
