Eventually the most beautiful viewpoint of Lisbon
Santa Luzia is eventually the most beautiful viewpoint of Lisbon.
Lisbon, the city of the 7 hills, is also the place of many viewpoints. Among them, we can choose many favorites for several reasons, but the Santa Luzia Viewpoint has everything to be eventually the most beautiful of all.
Very sought after by tourists and locals, it is challenging to photograph it without visitors. From daybreak to late at night, there is no lack of reasons to visit it and enjoy some time of contemplation. The fantastic view from Santa Luzia competes with the beauty of the space and its decorative tile panels.
The water mirror and the two panels by António Quaresma are by themselves the reason to visit when you can observe the Praça do Comércio before the earthquake and the capture of the Castle of São Jorge to the Moors.
From the view itself, Alfama, right at the feet of the visitor, with its churches of Santa Engrácia and Santo Estevão as well as the towers of St. Michael’s Church, shows the labyrinthine tangle of streets and alleys. Just in front, the cruise terminal and the Tagus River estuary’s immensity, up to the south bank where the Arrábida mountain range, located about 25 km to the south, is visible on clear days.
On photography
I photographed this image at 10:00 AM with a Fuji X-T2 and a 10-24mm lens. I used the Acros+Red filter profile and edited in Adobe Lightroom Classic.
Santa Luzia Viewpoint, in photographic terms, due to its southern orientation, can have great light in the early morning, but the best light is in the afternoon. I would recommend the morning visit for less crowded images and late afternoon, expecting more crowd. Don’t forget to visit the nearby Portas do Sol Viewpoint, also a great spot for afternoon and dusk images.
We visit the Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol Viewpoints regularly in our photography walks Discover Lisbon with a Photographer – Morning Edition and Discover Lisbon with a Photographer – Afternoon Edition.
